withatheoreticalandexperientialdescriptionofwhatmeta-momentsareandhowtheyrelate
toart.Justasexceptionalworksofartshouldspeaktopeopleofalllevelsofknowledge,sotoo
shouldexceptionalcurationshouldatonceexposeaccessiblethemeswhilechallengingviewers
topersonallygrowalongsidetheexhibition.Onwalkingthroughtheexhibition,onewillfind
threadsthatlinkthepaintingstogether,allowingittobeappreciatedasalargerunit.Andon
theconceptuallevel,thethematicorganizationaroundmeta-momentsisareminderthatthe
culminationofartliesinthemomentofreflexivesignificationthatitinducesintheviewer.
AsTantricsubjectshavealwaysbeenknowntohaveasignificantandlastingimpactonviewers,
theyarehighlysuitedsubstratesforanexhibitiononmeta-moments.Thisexhibitiontherefore
containsalargenumberofTantricworksofart,withanemphasisondeitiesbelongingtothe
highestclassofTantras,suchasKālacakra,Guhyasamāja,Vajrabhairava,andBuddhakapala.
Inthemiddleoflastyear,IwasaskedwhatdirectionfutureresearchinTibetanArtmighttake.
Thisisnotaneasyquestiongiventhematurityofscholarshipinthefield.Ithasprogresseda
greatdealsincemyfather,NavinKumar,startedcollectingTibetanartinthe1960s.Manyworks...
ofarthavenowbeendatedbasedoninscriptions,andprovidesolidanchorpointsforfurther
interpretationofarthistory.Andanevenlargersetofworkscanbedatedtowithinacoupleof
decadesbycross-correlatingdepictedlineageswithtextualsources.Yet,instarkcontrasttothese
anchoringcases,onefindsanincrediblepersistenceofstylisticmotifsacrossthecenturies,and
thatisinadditiontoiconographicinvarianceofmostsubjects.Thisfacthighlightsthemarvelsof
ourcapacitytodevelopasensitivityofperiodandprovenancethroughhighlysubtlevariations
